Engineering encompasses many different disciplines.
Engineering is a broad discipline with many specialties, including chemical, mechanical, nuclear and computer sciences. Engineering scholarships, typically awarded for merit, provide funding for students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. Professional associations offer a number of scholarships, each with its own requirements for residency, area of study or membership in an ethnic group.
Association of State Dam Safety Officials
The Association of State Dam Safety Officials awards undergraduate scholarships to students enrolled in civil engineering fields that are specific to the operation, design and construction of dams. In particular, the association funds students in hydrology, hydraulics and geotechnical disciplines. Students must be U.S. citizens in their senior year of study and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Academic advisors must recommend the applicant. Scholarships are awarded for academic excellence, financial need and extracurricular activities.
SAE International
SAE International offers endowed scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students in engineering and related sciences, including math, biology, chemistry, technologies, physics and computer science. The company sponsors scholarships awarded by universities and each carries its own requirements. Sophomore students in Montana qualify for Siegel Service Technology scholarships. The Ralph K. Hilquist Honorary scholarship funds juniors specializing in courses on noise and vibration. Graduate students and Ph.D. students qualify for Yammar scholarships, and for a forgivable loan program.
National Society of Professional Engineers
The National Society of Professional Engineers sponsors scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. The Blitman scholarship is awarded to minority high school seniors, and high school competitors in the MATHCOUNTS competitions qualify for the Jean-Guy Beliveau scholarship. Six scholarships are available to undergraduate students, including the Kimel Scholarship, awarded to students in Missouri and Kansas, and the Miller Scholarship, available to students at the University of Arkansas. Three fellowships are open to graduate students. One awards business students working toward an MBA in engineering management.
American Indian Science and Engineering Society
The American Indian Science and Engineering Society administers four scholarship programs for enrolled members of Native American tribes. AISES Google awards are nonrenewable and go to students with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA majoring in computer engineering or computer science. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation awards full-tuition scholarships to American Indians living in the 12 states where the company operates. AISES Intel awards students who show leadership and A. T. Anderson scholarships, named in honor of the chemical engineer who founded the society, go to students majoring in engineering, natural resources, medicine and math.
