Locate The Elevation Of My City

Sometimes when the location of a city or landmark is mentioned, you hear people talk about the location in terms of elevation. Elevation is the word used to describe how high or low a place is compared to sea level. If you are interested in finding the elevation of your city, it takes little time to do so, by submitting a query through the United States Geological Survey website.

Instructions

1. Point your Internet browser to the United States Geological Survey website, Usgs.gov. You can access maps, earthquake information and view statistics for your city and state here.

2. Click "Maps, Imagery and Publications" from the top menu.

3. Look to the Portals and Collections sidebar menu to the right of the page and select "Geographic Names (GNIS)." You can look up data for cities and states here.

4. Click "Search" from the menu options to the left of the page to open the USGS Query Form.

5. Enter the name of your city in the form and check the box next to "Exact Match" to view geographic data for only your city. If you don't select Exact Match, the search results will include information for different locations throughout your city, such as the courthouse or jail.

6. Select your state and county from the drop-down menu and click "Send Query." The results list will open.

7. Look at the results next to your city name: This will be the only result if you selected Exact Match in Step 5. Some information listed for your city includes the longitude, latitude and elevation. In the box under Ele(ft) is the elevation for your city, measured in feet.
