Identify Real Gold From Panning In Fresh Water

There are many places in America where you can pan for gold.

Gold is the most stable commodity in today's market and it has exceeded every other currency in history. It is easy to store, transport and has a consistent value all over the world. Most importantly, no government can inflate its value. For this reason, you may find an interest in adding gold to your portfolio, or better yet, you may like to grab some equipment and go pan for it yourself. If you find this idea intriguing, there are a few things you need to know before you start.

Instructions

1. Research the laws concerning panning in your chosen area. Every state is different. Panning under the term "recreational prospector" will exclude you from most state mining laws, but research your specific state and stay informed.

2. Dig material from your chosen spot with a hand shovel and place it in your pan.

3. Remove larger rocks and pebbles by hand and wash all the mud and clay off before disposing of it so you will not accidentally throw any hidden gold that might be stuck in the clay back into the creek.

4. "Side sweep" the pan by holding it firmly with both hands, moving it side to side in repetitive sweeping motions, about two times per second, working the gold down the pan sideways.

5. Wash the top layer off of the gravel by dipping the pan back into the water, increasing the degree of the angle of your pan a little more each time. Slowly backwash the sand away from the gold to drive the gold sand to the riffles, with the black sand and silt to the top and the gold nuggets to the bottom. Relax and find the rhythm that works for you. If you focus too much on losing gold it will inhibit you from shaking the pan vigorously enough to separate the gold from the silt.

6. Tap the side of the pan rhythmically to differentiate the gold from the gravel. This is called stratification.

7. Suction any gold that is left on the riffled area and the smooth surface in the bottom of the pan and drop into the vial. Carefully remove any gold nuggets at the bottom of the pan and place them in a vial or separate container.
