Pan for Gold in New York State
Finding gold nuggets or even a few grains of gold can be thrilling and rewarding as you pan for gold. Besides the possibility of finding gold, gold panning gets you outdoors in nature. The state of New York does not have an age limit for gold panning, nor any fees. After some planning, people have found gold throughout New York state with more success in particular areas over others. Instructions
1. Locate in New York companies that sell gravel or sand. Small amounts of gold can be found in rivers and streams near these gravel pits.
2. Pan for gold on private property rather than state property. Although New York state regulations do not specifically mention gold panning, New York laws do not allow any kind of disturbance of the stream beds on state property. Get permission first from the property owners before you start gold panning.
3. Pan for gold in New York state where the glacier moraines end, such as the south ends of the Finger Lakes. These glacier moraines, also called gravel deposits, originated from the Ice Age period when New York state was covered with glaciers. The Finger Lakes in Central and Upstate New York are 11 narrow, long lakes, which run almost parallel from north to south and appear as fingers on outstretched hands. Major cities near the Finger Lakes include Syracuse, Ithaca, Rochester, Auburn, Elmira, Skaneateles, Clifton, Geneva and Cayuga. Other locations to pan for gold include northern and western New York state.
4. Join a gold panning club, such as the Gold Prospector Association of America (GPAA). Information about club meeting locations, dates and times in New York state are available on the GPAA website.
