An oil and gas landman acts as a field representative for oil and gas companies who want to buy the rights to explore for petroleum from landowners.

1. A landman is the field representative for a company that wants to buy the resources that are on or below a landowners property. Oil and gas landmen specialize in petroleum work. It is a very lucrative career and one that is increasingly in demand in areas such as Pennsylvania where natural gas exploration is occurring. To become a landman you should have a degree from a four year university that is accredited and accepted by the AAPL or American Association Of Professional Landmen. To become a landman you do not have to have a license in most states, however it helps greatly to become registered or certified by the AAPL. To take the RL test the AAPL requires that you be a member and be currently working in the field of land work, such as for a Certified Professional Landman. Your first step in the process then is to find a practicing landman to work for. Then you can study for and take the AAPL test.
2. An oil and gas landman must understand real estate law, deeds, mineral rights, oil and gas terms and much more. There are study manuals available that can help you master all of the terms and procedures that pertain to oil and gas leasing. Study these well before requesting to take the AAPL test. After taking the AAPL test and passing it you will become a registered landman. The next step is to work in the field of landwork, usually as an apprentice for a Certified oil and gas landman for around five years. Depending on the firm you work as a field agent for you may be able to perform most of the duties of a landman and earn a good salary.
3. After you have at least five years of landwork under you belt you can take the test to become a Registered Professional Landman. With ten years experience you can become a Certified Professional Landman. With either of these AAPL certifications you may be able to find work directly representing an oil and gas company as a field agent. The key to becoming a successful landman is continuing education and keeping abreast of changing laws. It helps greatly to have good people skills since you will be meeting with land owners to try and negotiate a reasonable deal with them. If you can convey the mutual benefits of the deal your employer has proposed you can become a valuable asset and earn good money as a landman.
