GEMS schools are known for their educational quality.
GEMS stands for Global Education Management Systems and is run by the Varkey family. The school system began in 1959 when the late K.S. and Mariamma Varkey arrived in Dubai from India and began teaching the local students. When their son Sunny took over, the family business became a multinational company with a global reputation.
Locations
The highest concentration of schools in the GEMS group is located in the United Arab Emirates. Nineteen schools are located in Dubai alone, including Dubai Modern High School, Jumeirah College, and GEMS Royal Dubai School. Abu Dhabi and Sharjah each contain a handful of schools, and Al Ain and Fujairah have one GEMS school each. GEMS schools can also be found in Qatar, Jordan, Libya, the United Kingdom, and India.
Academic Quality
GEMS schools are becoming increasingly well-known on a global scale for the quality of education they provide to students. In the last ten years, GEMS students have won over 300 regional and international awards for success in sports, academics, and the arts. The overall pass rate is 15 percent higher for GEMS students than the worldwide pass rate. Additionally, GEMS students often obtain scores one or two years above their grade level in standardized tests.
Quality of Teachers and Educators
GEMS schools employ over 6,000 teachers from more than 60 countries, as well as 3,000 specialists. Every year, GEMS teachers and educators can benefit from more than 150 events and workshops focusing on leadership, teaching and learning, literacy, and language. Principals of GEMS schools have outstanding backgrounds and convey world-class education to their schools.
Accreditations and Affiliations
GEMS schools providing an international curriculum for students are members of the Council of International Schools (CIS), which ensures the highest standards of education and school operation. Some GEMS schools, including Dubai American Academy and GEMS World Academy, offer an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. GEMS schools that provide an Indian-stream education are affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education or the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations.
