Civil engineers use math and science to solve technical engineering problems. Railroad engineers monitor trains and are responsible for engine repair and maintenance. In 2011 the Bureau of Labor Statistics states that employment for engineers is expected to grow by approximately 11 percent by 2018. Civil engineers usually work on long-term research and development projects focusing on structural and transportation engineering.
Florida Colleges
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University offer a degree in civil engineering and technology, which teaches students structural systems, geotechnics, surveying and transportation. The program trains pupils in theoretical and practical applications of engineer training and has them working alongside civil engineering technologists. Florida Institute of Technology offers a bachelor of science in civil engineering studied over four years. In the first two years, students learn engineering mechanics, mathematics and chemistry, allowing them to develop knowledge of structural systems and surveying. Pupils have access to research laboratories where they can practice physical testing.
Mid-Western Colleges
High-speed rail engineering; railway transportation engineering and railroad track engineering are all taught at the University of Illinois. The railroad engineering program consists of six courses where students are taught track analysis and design, asset management, locomotive design and operations and functions. Pupils are expected to attend field trips as part of the study program where they analyse railroad infrastructure and facility operations.
The civil engineering program at Michigan State University teaches planning, design and administration of transit systems. Six modules are covered as part of the degree, which includes transportation, structural and environmental engineering. Students have access to a career advisor to provide study guidance and an engineering machine shop.
Californian Colleges
California State University Long Beach offers a civil engineering degree which teaches maintenance of structure systems including: railroads and highways, and structural analysis and design. The program covers a broad spectrum of engineering science so students have an option of which engineering field they wish to work in. Choices include construction and structural environmental and geotechnical engineering.
Students can study mechanical engineering, applied mechanics or civil engineering at California Tech University. A faculty mentor offers learning guidance and advice throughout each study program. There is the opportunity to take on practical research projects alongside academic study where each student is guided by a member of staff.
Louisiana Colleges
Engineering studies at Louisiana State University focus on structural, environmental and transportation engineering. Students have access to two job fairs a year, giving them contact with potential future employees from local and national civil engineering firms. While studying for a studying bachelor of science in civil engineering, pupils have access to laboratories and a technology center equipped with testing equipment and facilities. A computer center and machine shop are also located on campus.
