The college requirements for a marine biologist aren't that different than the requirements of any science, but they may be harder to find as not all locations are conducive to learning about the ocean and ocean life. Depending on your career choice, commercial or conservation, you will want to find a degree from associate's level to master's level, or possibly even a Ph.D.
Time Frame
If you want to major in marine biology in college, you need to start preparing in high school or even before. Keep a high GPA and take as many science and math classes as possible.
Potential
In order to become a marine biologist, you may need to go beyond a Bachelor's degree in science and complete a Master's degree as well. It may only be possible for you to take a general biology undergrad program and then specialize later on--that's okay.
Math
Calculus and statistics are important classes for you to take. Marine biologists need to focus on math just as much as science.
Science
Don't focus only on biology. While it is obviously important for you, physics, chemistry, ecology and geology are all sciences that relate to the field.
Internships
If at all possible, get a summer internship that is related to marine biology. It doesn't necessarily have to be out at sea. Instead, find a local aquarium and see what they need volunteers to do.
Warning
Slacking off in English classes to focus on math and science won't help you. A marine biologist needs to be able to communicate clearly and your writing skills will be judged just as critical to your success.
Misconceptions
Marine biology isn't all dolphins and whales. The marine ecosystem is complex and varied and you may not get what you expect. Do your research.
