Degree requirements for psychology students.
The Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) is located on a 26-acre campus in the Brooklyn section of New York City. With over 70 undergraduate and 60 graduate level programs, Brooklyn College's academic programs serve a diverse blend of approximately 17,000 students annually. Students interested in majoring in psychology will find multiple undergraduate major options, including a bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, and teacher education concentration in psychology that all maintain standards for learning set forth by the American Psychological Association.
B.A. in Psychology
The Bachelor of Art (B.A.) in Psychology major at Brooklyn College requires a minimum of 29 to 31 specialized psychology focus courses for graduation, as well as additional general education/liberal arts classes. Students must begin the psychology course sequence with PSY 1.1, Introductory Psychology. This three-credit class introduces major theories and basic principles as well as abnormal psychology and behavioral development. Basic research oriented requirements include a four-credit class in Statistical Methods in Psychological Research and Experimental Psychology. Students must also select a variety of basic electives such as Social Psychology, Introduction to Child Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Introduction to Psychology, Learning, and other introductory psychology courses. Major requirements state that all students must also choose a minimum of three advanced electives. These may include Independent Research or Fieldwork.
B.S. in Psychology
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Psychology majors at Brooklyn College must complete 29 to 31 credits in psychology that include Introductory Psychology, Statistical Methods in Psychological Research, and Experimental Psychology. Additionally, B.S. Psychology students must choose from the same basic and advanced psychology electives as B.A. degree students. Unlike the B.A. degree, B.S. requirements specifically state that students must take 60 credits in science and mathematics courses. Classes that will fulfill these requirements include Biology. Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Anthropology, Archaeology, Physical Education, Math (students may select from courses offered by the Mathematics department) and Sociology.
Childhood Teacher Program
The Brooklyn College offers a Concentration in Psychology major for pre-service teachers. Students enrolled in this program must complete specialized course work focused on child development, human learning, instructional practices, and other related classes to teach children birth through grade two (early childhood education) and first through sixth grades (childhood education). The Concentration in Psychology curriculum consists of 30 credits of required and elective psychology courses. Required courses are Introductory Psychology, Social Psychology, Introductory Child Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Cognitive Development. Students must also select a minimum of 15 elective credits from courses such as Psychology of Prejudice, Health Psychology, Social and Personality Development of Children, Psychology of the Family, Counseling Processes, or Research Methods.
