Civil Engineering Degree Colleges

Civil engineers plan and supervise the construction of structures such as bridges.

Stateuniversity.com, a Web site providing information on various careers, notes that civil engineers are responsible for the planning and design of structures such as bridges, tunnels, skyscrapers and irrigation systems. They often specialize in an area such as hydraulics, transportation or environmental engineering. A bachelor's degree is a minimal requirement for obtaining work in the field. Degree programs train students in skills such as mechanics and structural design. Graduate study is recommended for career advancement or obtaining positions as teachers.

University of California Berkeley

First-year civil engineering students at the University of California Berkeley complete a common undergraduate curriculum that includes courses such as calculus, chemistry, physics and engineering geology. In subsequent years they pursue studies in elective areas including engineering project management, structural engineering and hydrology. Seniors take additional electives such as water chemistry, advanced materials mechanics and transportation systems engineering to round out the civil engineering curriculum. Admissions is based on review of high school transcripts, SAT scores and other factors such participation in extracurricular activities and community involvement.

University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign

Undergraduate civil engineering students at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign complete 133 credits in order to earn a bachelor's degree. The first two years of the program are devoted to the study of physics, math, mechanics and general engineering courses. Juniors and seniors focus on civil and environmental engineering courses and select both a major and concentration within the discipline, such as environmental hydrology and hydraulics, construction engineering and management or structural engineering. Applicants to the undergraduate program need to submit high school transcripts, SAT scores and two personal essays for review by the university's admissions department.

Georgia Institute of Technology

Students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in civil engineering can earn an MSCE (Master of Science in Civil Engineering) degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. To earn the MSCE degree, students must complete at least 30 credits in six years or less. The degree program offers a thesis or non-thesis option; students selecting the non-thesis option take 18 credits of major course work compared to the 12 required of students in the thesis track. Applicants submit three recommendation letters and a personal statement along with undergraduate transcripts and standardized test scores.

University of Texas

Doctoral students in civil engineering at the University of Texas enter formal candidacy for the degree by passing a qualifying exam, proving proficiency in English and having an application for candidacy approved by graduate school faculty members. Degree candidates focus their research in a specialty area such as construction engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering or mechanics and materials. Applicants to the Ph.D program need to submit transcripts, standardized test scores and three recommendation letters to start the admissions process and be considered for available fellowships and teaching assistantships.
