Hike Nevada'S Red Rock Canyon

Nevada's Red Rock Canyon, just minutes away from Las Vegas, offers 189,000 square miles of hiking and backpacking trails over terrain of creek beds and mountains. You'll see wildlife including herds of wild burros, descendants of animals miners used 100 years ago. You can see fossils, petroglyphs and many rare desert plants and animals in this beautiful, protected area.

Instructions

1. Take Highway 159, also known as Charleston Boulevard, west out of Las Vegas until you reach the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center, where you can get a map of Red Rock Canyon's hiking trails.

2. Decide which trail or trails you want to hike. Levels of difficulty range from easy to strenuous. They list the estimated time each trail takes to walk on the map.

3. Drive to a parking area conveniently located near the trail you've chosen to hike.

4. Dress appropriately for the difficulty level of your hike, the time of the year and your personal comfort. For example, bring warm clothing if you're hiking in the wintertime because Red Rock Canyon can get cold by dusk.

5. Enjoy the scenery while hiking and take the time to stop and look at things.

6. Ascend slopes while breathing deeply, because higher altitudes have less oxygen. Also, don't underestimate how dehydrated you can get hiking in the Nevada desert. Bring as much water as you can carry and drink it often.

7. Photograph the natural beauty of Nevada's Red Rock Canyon so you will always remember your hiking experience there.
