Government grants are available for GIS projects.
Whether you are seeking financing for a large project or a small venture, government grants are a great way to fund a project or program. Grants from the government are awarded in a number of fields and industries, such as geographical information systems (GIS). There are a number of GIS government grants available to the public today that are administered by numerous governmental agencies, such as the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Institutes of Health.
The NCDI Cooperative Agreements Program (CAP)
The Cooperative Agreements Program (CAP) is administered by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). The FGDC is a governmental agency that encourages the development and collection of geospatial data. Under the program called the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), the FGDC funds projects that make data available to the general GIS seeking public. The CAP is a grant program that filters these funds to the GIS and geospatial data community. The grant is open to the private and public sectors, and is only to be used for areas that emphasize geographical information through outreach practices, such as metadata clearinghouses and other websites dedicated to geospatial-related services. Award amounts vary depending on the project extent and funding activity.

The grant is awarded to nonprofit and private or public academic institutions and all governmental agencies, both local and state. The grant is to be used for GIS research, promotion, education, outreach and analysis. Award amounts vary depending on the type of project.

Geographic and Contextual Influences on Energy Balance-Related Health Behaviors
The Geographic and Contextual Influences on Energy Balance-Related Health Behaviors grant is funded by the National Institutes of Health and is available to public or private academic institutions, nonprofit businesses and organizations, local or state governments, federally recognized tribal governments, and foreign agencies, organizations and institutions. Individuals are also eligible as long as they can demonstrate the proper resources, expertise and knowledge required for the proposed project. Applicants must be able to use GIS to conduct health studies and research on human populations, their health behaviors, how such behaviors affect their health and human health related interactions with the environment. Grant awards are based on project extent.
