A graduate education in Environmental Studies can encompass a variety of disciplines and fields, including law, policy, political science, geology, technology and biology. Job opportunities in the environmental field, such as for environmental scientists and specialists, are projected to increase by 28 percent -- much faster than average -- between 2008 and 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. University of California Berkeley
The University of California at Berkeley's Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management offers a Master of Science in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, a Master of Science in Range Management, a Master of Forestry and a Doctorate in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management. Doctoral candidates specialize in an area of their choice, such as Microbial Community Ecology, International Forest Management or Remote Sensing, and must complete original dissertation research. Master's students can choose a thesis or an oral examination.
Harvard University Extension School
The Harvard University Extension School offers a Master of Arts through the Graduate Program in Sustainability and Environmental Management. The program is designed for working professionals and many classes can be taken online. Students concentrate on ecological development or sustainable management. The degree prepares graduates for careers in areas such as sustainable architecture, environmental law, consulting or research. Students must complete nine courses and write a thesis, or take 11 courses and complete a capstone course.
University of Pennsylvania
The University of Pennsylvania's College of Liberal and Professional Studies offers a Master's degree in Environmental Studies. Students choose a concentration from several areas, including Environmental Advocacy and Education, Environmental Health, Resource Management, Environmental Policy, Urban Environment or Environmental Biology. Students can also design an individualized focus area or pursue a dual degree in Environmental Studies and Business Administration through the Wharton Business School. Advanced students can earn an International Multi-Master of Environmental Management from France's Ecole des Mines de Paris and China's Tsinghua University.
University of Michigan
The University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and the Environment, located in Ann Arbor, offers a Master or Doctorate of Landscape Architecture, a Doctorate of Natural Resources and eight Master of Science degrees. Program focus-area options include Aquatic Sciences Research and Management, Behavior, Education and Communication, Conservation Biology, Environmental Justice, Environmental Policy and Planning, and Terrestrial Ecosystems. Doctoral students must complete a dissertation within five years and teach undergraduate classes for two years.
University of Colorado at Boulder
The University of Colorado at Boulder's Environmental Studies Program offers a Master of Science and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Environmental Studies. The Master's degree program requires 36 credit hours and completion of either a thesis or internship. The Doctoral degree program requires completion of 42 credit hours, a comprehensive exam and 30 hours of dissertation credit. Coursework topics include water, conservation, energy, biogeoscience and environmental social science.
