A computer field technician personally assists people and businesses, diagnosing and repairing computers. Unless you are working for yourself, you will need either a degree, certification or both before employers will consider you. Field technicians earned a median annual wage of $37,620 in 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Instructions
1. Obtain an associate's degree in electronics. Companies typically look for field technicians who are either certified or have an associate degree in electronics or have prior training in another institution or in the military, according to the BLS.
2. Pass a certification test. Although companies will hire computer field technicians who possess only an associate's degree or have completed prior training, many companies also like to see technicians who are certified. Most certification programs require the a passing score on either a written or online exam. Interested technicians can take the test after contacting certification organizations such CompTIA or the local community college.
3. Start your own computer technician business. If you are not interested in working for an employer, work for yourself. While a degree is not necessary when starting your own business, some states do require certification. Decide if you want to focus on servicing personal computers, business computers or both.
