Geospatial grants support emergency preparedness programs.
According to the National Geospatial Program, the term "geospatial" refers to all things that can be geographically identified on Earth. Geospatial grants support a wide array of projects such as information and technology software development, which can be used for geological projects including national security, education, emergency preparedness or to survey infrastructures.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security provides grants to strengthen the nation's defense program by incorporating geospatial information technologies into its national emergency preparedness program. The funding can be used to develop geospatial data and file sharing templates that will be accessible to the Department of Homeland Security and other relevant entities.
Grant recipients are encouraged to develop file systems and "geospatial models" that are open and sharable. However, DHS does not require grant recipients to implement this model on the entirety of their projects. Prospective applicants are advised to review grant guidelines for individual projects. Geospatial proposals should consider factors such as DHS' geospatial requirements, education and training programs that use geospatial applications, and strategies for providing trained personnel who can operate emergency preparedness technology.

Federal Geographic Data Committee
The Federal Geographic Data Committee manages and promotes the development, use, sharing and distribution of geospatial data nationwide in the "national spatial data infrastructure." The committee works with the U.S. Geological Survey. Under the Cooperative Agreements Program, the committee provides technical and financial support for relevant geospatial programs. The grant is open to academic institutions, state, local and tribal governments and non-profit organizations. Program applicants are encouraged to participate in collaborative projects.

Environmental Systems Research Institute--ESRI
The Environmental Systems Research Institute developed the Geographic Information System (GIS) to provide local and regional communities with the latest geospatial technology. Governments can also benefit from GIS technology by incorporating it into their emergency preparedness programs using software that is designed for response to disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and oil spills.
The ESRI GIS Technology Grants program has provided over 600 counties with GIS software as well as opportunities for virtual-campus training programs. The grant helps 4-H youth programs integrate science, engineering and technology into their educational initiatives.
