Civil Engineering Master'S Degrees

Master's students in civil engineering can specialize in structural design.

Earning a master's degree in civil engineering can prepare students for entry to doctoral programs or provide them with the advanced training needed to progress in their careers. Because of the broad variety of work performed by civil engineers, students in master's programs typically select an area of specialization, such as structural, environmental or coastal engineering.

University of New Mexico

Students in the master's in civil engineering programs at the University of New Mexico can select from six concentrations, including environmental engineering, structural engineering and construction engineering and management. There are thesis and non-thesis options available; students in the non-thesis option take 35 credits, compared with 32 credits for students who complete a master's thesis. Applicants should have an academic background in civil engineering. Prospective students who do not have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering may be required to take some undergraduate courses in the field in addition to the graduate-level courses.

Clemson University

Clemson University notes on its website that civil engineering has been taught at the school since its inception in 1889. At the master's level, students can select from specializations that include construction engineering, structural engineering and applied fluid mechanics. The master's degree requires 30 credits and can be completed in three or four semesters of study. Admission to the master's program in civil engineering is based on a review of undergraduate transcripts, standardized test scores and recommendations, along with a statement of purpose. Students who complete a master's degree can go on to a PhD program or find employment in private industry or government agencies, according to Clemson's website.

Johns Hopkins University

The master of science degree in civil engineering at Johns Hopkins University can be completed in two to four semesters of full-time study. Alternatively, students can apply to a part-time program and take courses on weekday evenings and Saturdays, completing the degree within five years. Students can select from two options; one requires 10 courses, and the other requires eight courses and a master's essay approved by a faculty adviser. Program curriculum is designed individually by students to reflect their interests in areas such as structural engineering, geomechanics, hazards management or coastal engineering.

Michigan State University

Students in the master's program in civil engineering at Michigan State University can focus their research in the areas of structural, materials or pavement engineering. Master's degree candidates select from three options, all of which require 30 credits of coursework. One option requires defense of a thesis, another option requires completion of an independent project, and the final option is coursework only, with no thesis or project required. Admissions is based on a review of undergraduate transcripts, standardized test scores, and personal and academic statements.
