You can become a geology teacher by earning a degree and taking standardized tests.
To become a secondary school geology teacher you need to major in geology, attain your state certification and then find a job. Because the geology major is offered by most universities, the number of schools from which you can choose is limited only by your academic record and test scores. Teacher certification is determined by state standards. Most states mandate a series of standardized tests to achieve certification.

1. Attend a university and earn a degree in geology.
Attend an accredited university and earn a degree in geology. While the traditional path is to get your degree in four years, some people can do it in a shorter or longer time. Consider you work and family commitments when charting your degree path. If you going to college at the traditional age, you can do it in four years, even less if you are extremely motivated. Check course requirements in the state where you plan to work to ensure that you take the appropriate courses. Earning a master's degree will make you more marketable and result in higher pay.
2. Work as an intern at a local school. You can sign up through your college's education department. In this position you will work with an teacher for several months. During the first few weeks you will observe the teacher. In later weeks, you will write your own lesson plans and teach the students.
3. Take the teacher certification tests. While each state has different requirements, most states require that you take a series of Praxis tests. Check the Praxis website and your state requirements. Most teacher candidates in all subjects must take general education tests in reading, writing and math. Take a science test. If you have a strong general educational background and strong, substantive knowledge in your field, these tests will strike you as SAT-lite and you will finish with time to spare. Know the score required by your state. If you are not an excellent test-taker, prepare extensively using test preparation materials.
4. Complete the state application for certification. Send this with your academic transcripts and Praxis test scores to the state office listed on the application. Provided that you have met all your requirements, you will be certified to teach geology in your state.
