Geological engineers study to improve oil drilling methods.
Geological engineers study natural resources and develop philosophies and tactics to extract minerals and petroleum from underneath the Earth's surface. Colleges and universities educate students in geological engineering through academic coursework, field training and research. Graduates of a geological engineering program can find opportunities in construction firms, consulting companines, oil companies and government agencies.
Curriculum
Students in a geological engineering degree program must take courses in geological materials engineering, exploration geophysics, geomechanical engineering, exploration design, geohazard analysis and remote sensing for engineering. These courses provide students with an opportunity to acquire an understanding of the earth's structure, rocks and soil. Students learn about computer imaging technology, environmental science and basic natural sciences. Other topics covered in these courses include foundations for structures, contaminated sites and energy sources.
Field Work
In addition to classroom work, students are also required to work in the field. This offers students an opportunity to apply the theories they learned in their coursework into practical applications in the field. Field work provides students with the chance to work in teams and create detailed reports of their findings. Students working in the field may have an opportunity to map terrain, discuss findings, and develop compass and pace methods.
Research
Students enrolled in a geological engineering program are encouraged to participate in research projects. These projects may be lead by faculty members, and students have an opportunity to perform research in a number of related geological areas, including geology, rock mechanics, solid waste management, water resources, sustainable engineering, alternative energy and engineering of recycled materials. Research also provides students with an opportunity to network and create work opportunities.
Project
In order to graduate, students are also required to complete a project in the field. Before beginning the project, students must create an outline of their project and gain approval from a faculty member. Students will have to research and create an original project and present it in front of a panel. This project can be used as an example of a student's work when they look for employment opportunities.
