Geological and geotechnical engineering is a branch of civil and environmental engineering that deals with the behavior of earth materials in the building of dams and other structures. A variety of scholarships is available for students pursuing a degree in geological engineering. Most nationally available scholarships come from sources such as professional engineering associations and private companies.
Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists
The Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists offers several scholarships to geological engineering students. The Marliave Scholarship Fund is available in the amount of $3,000 to graduate students. The Martin L. Stout Scholarship and the Norman R. Tilford Field Studies Scholarship are available in amounts of up to $1,000 for undergraduates and $2,000 for graduate students who are also student members of AEG. The Richard Chambers Memorial Scholarships is available to graduate students and valued at $1,000 for master's students and $2,000 for Ph.D. candidates.
Roy J. Shlemon Scholarship Fund for Engineering Geology
The Geological Society of America makes scholarship money available to graduate students in geological engineering through the Roy J. Shlemon Scholarship Fund for Engineering Geology. This scholarship is awarded in the amount of $1,000, and is awarded on the basis of an applicant's research proposal. To be eligible, an applicant must be a student member of the Engineering Geology Division of the Geological Society of America. Each year, one award is given to a master's student and one to a Ph.D. candidate.
Shell Scholarships
Shell Energy makes two scholarship programs available to undergraduate students in geological engineering. The Shell Incentive Fund is awarded in amounts of $5,000 to students who are U.S. citizens, have a grade point average of 3.2 or better on a scale of 4.0, and belong to an underrepresented minority group. This scholarship carries the potential of renewal for up to four years. The Shell Technical Scholarship is also available in the amount of $5,000 per year for up to four years. The annual deadline for application is Feb. 28 for both scholarships.
SWE Scholarships
The Society of Women Engineers offers several nationally available scholarship programs to female students of geological engineering and other branches of civil engineering. For example, the Elizabeth McLean Memorial Scholarship is available in the amount of $1,500 to undergraduate geological engineering students with a GPA of 3.0 or better. The $2,500 ITT Scholarship is available to geological engineering students at both the undergraduate and graduate level, provided that they have GPAs of 3.5 or better. The $1,400 Bechtel Foundation Scholarship is available to female undergraduate geological engineering students who are SWE members and have a GPA of at least 3.0.
