Surveying programs offer specializations in geomatics, mapping science, and other areas
When selecting a land surveying school, it is important to choose a program that will prepare you for licensure within your region. While licensing requirements vary from state to state, the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying recommends obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited four-year surveying program. As of October 2009, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology recognized six schools with four-year accredited residential programs in surveying and geomatics.
East Tennessee State University
East Tennessee State University (ETSU) offers a Bachelor of Science degree in surveying and mapping, with electives in cadastral design, Geographic Information Systems and photogrammetry, and surveying business. With laboratory classes usually limited to 15 to 18 students, ETSU provides close interaction with instructors and extensive preparation for the Fundamentals of Land Surveying portion of the professional license exam. As part of the interstate agreement Academic Common Market, ETSU offers in-state tuition not only to residents of Tennessee but also to residents of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
