Museums In Buffalo New York

The city of Buffalo is located in western New York State, close to Lake Erie. Known as the birth place of "Buffalo wings" and home to the State University of New York at Buffalo, or SUNY Buffalo, the city has become known as a hub for contemporary arts practice in western New York. Furthermore, the SUNY Buffalo archives holds the estates of several well-known contemporary American composers, including Morton Feldman. Because of this, Buffalo also often attracts visiting musicians and music scholars.


Buffalo Museum of Science


A part of Buffalo's culture since 1836, the Buffalo Museum of Science has collections and exhibitions in anthropology, zoology, geology and meteorology. There are also a wide array of interactive exhibits on display at any given time. These have included a history of the science of beer-making and an exhibit on the life and history of bugs, which included a 3D animated film. Other exhibits include one on dinosaurs and another the "Ecology of the Niagra Frontier."


Albright-Knox Art Gallery


The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is a gallery devoted to modern art. The gallery's collection includes examples by various artists considered to be masters of twentieth-century contemporary art. They include works by Warhol, Pollock and Gorky. The gallery also has pieces by painters from the later nineteenth-century, including works by van Gogh, Picasso, Miro and Mondrian. Pieces in the gallery's collection include: "La jeune bonne" by Amedeo Modigliani; "Chemin de halage a Argenteuil" by Claude Monet; "Ace" by Robert Rauschenberg; "Orange and Yellow" by Mark Rothko and "100 Cans" by Andy Warhol.


Burchfield Penny Art Center


The Burchfield Penny Art Center holds a wide and varied collection of contemporary designs and art pieces, including works in mediums such as painting, drawing, sketching, print making and wallpaper designs. Named after Charles Burchfield, a watercolorist that was known for his dedication to presenting the American landscape through watercolors, the arts center regularly holds concerts, readings, lectures, colloquiums and workshops that are all open to the public.. There is a special emphasis on how American aesthetics and culture are reflected through Western New York state arts practice. There is a special emphasis on Western New York artists, and the collection includes pieces by Frank Lloyd Wright, Joseph Piccillo, Gustav Stickly and Elbert Hubbard.


Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park


The Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park is dedicated to honoring and recognizing the history of and efforts by the United States' armed forces. Located close to downtown Buffalo, the museum includes a naval center, a historic submarine and various assorted wartime collections and items. All of the museum's materials are dedicated to showcasing memorabilia about US military history and efforts. Exhibits include ones on POW memorabilia, Vietnam veterans and Marine Corps memorabilia. Of special note are exhibits on women in the military and "Contributions of African-Americans to Our Country's Military Heritage."
