National Geographic Conservation Grants

Some children have dreams that they could one day become an explorer. When they are adults, those dreams can become reality. The National Geographic Society offers grants to aspiring explorers and science professionals in fields such as geology, archaeology, geography and other science-related fields. National Geographic conservation grants make it possible to explore the world.

Expeditions Council Grant

The Expeditions Council Grant is specifically for exploration of unknown geographical areas around the globe. Geographical areas also include areas in the midst of environmental or cultural change. Since National Geographic is media driven in nature, Expedition Council Grants are awarded to people who show a strong written and pictorially illustrative background. Normally, award amounts are between $5,000 and up to $35,000. Students can only use grant funds for field specific expenses. Applicants must fill out an online pre-application; submit pre-applications six months in advance, and upload a CV (curriculum vitae). The National Geographic Society will respond to a pre-application within eight weeks and if approved, the pre-applicant will be sent the full application via email.

Conservation Trust Grant

The Conservation Trust Grant targets teams or individuals with extensive research backgrounds or conservation achievements in specific fields. The Conservation Trust Grant's purpose is for the sustainable use and preservation of the Earth's historical, biological and cultural resources. The Conservation Grant supports conservation and research efforts in science areas that fit the purpose of the Conservation Trust Grant. Depending on the research project, grant stipends are between $15,000 and $20,000, but other stipulations may apply, such as grant funds not being directly used for a research project, preservation of archaeological artifacts and sites and travel expenses. The National Geography Society has set the same pre-application process for each of its conservation grants.

Young Explorers Grant

National Geographic has created the Young Explorers Grant for applicants between 18 and 25 years of age who have interests in exploration and conservation. An applicant must display prior experience and knowledge in his field. According to National Geographic, foreigners can apply for the Young Explorers Grant as well as United States citizens. Depending on the magnitude of the research, the grant stipend is between $2,000 and up to $5,000 and expenses must be directly related to the assignment selected. The National Geographic Society recommends that applicants treat a Young Explorers Grant as a supplement, and wants applicants to seek out other financial support in addition to the Young Explorers Grant. The Expeditions Council Grant's application eligibility process is required for the Young Explorers Grant.
