Recommended Home School Science Resources

Home school students need to study science as part of their curriculum.

Children who are taught at home through home schooling have limitations on learning science because a home is not set up for a science lab. There are resources available to the home schooled child that makes it possible for her to learn about sciences from elementary to high school level.

Books on Science

Science books vary by grade level and include items like experiments children can try or scientific reading they can learn from. The best books for home schooled science depend on the level the child is in for scientific studies. For example, chemistry books might include "Kids for Chemistry" by Dr. Gerald Bauldock or "Kitchen Science" by Christopher Maynard, while earth science studies might include books like "Dinosaurs for Every Kid" by Janice Van Cleave or "Geology Rocks!" by Cindy Blobaum.

Websites for Science

The Internet is a valuable resource for home schooled children who are learning about science. There are several websites children can learn about science from, such as Discovery Education or Federal Resources For Educational Excellence (see Resources). These give information according to grade level and subject which makes it convenient for a home schooled child to learn science.

Science Kits

Science kits are a resource for performing science labs within a small space. Kits vary on what is available within them, but often include items like microscopes, telescopes, magnets and measuring beakers or vials. Kits are available to purchase online at websites like WARD's Natural Science or American Science Surplus (see Resources).

Field Trips

Children can learn about science through field trips to various locations like science museums, zoos or wilderness parks. The local area will dictate what is available for a scientific field trip. For example, New York parents might take their children to the Museum of Natural History as a field trip option. Generally, field trips to science museums or children's museums will have science studies available. In the case of a children's museum, parents should find out about science classes or options available at the museum.
