Colorado is home to several great colleges and universities. Whether you are looking for academic excellence or a degree in recreation and tourism, you can find what you are looking for in a college in Colorado. Eleven Colorado schools were recognized in a ranking by Forbes Magazine of America's Best Colleges. Following are the top five schools that made the list.


United States Air Force Academy


The United States Air Force Academy is an accredited college located in Colorado Springs. The school is designated as an undergraduate education center for potential air force officers. After completion of a four-year program, students receive a bachelor's degree and most are enlisted into the air force with an officer's rank. Admission into the academy is extremely selective and most applicants must be recommended by a member of Congress. In addition to being ranked by Forbes as the best college in Colorado, the Air Force Academy is also ranked seventh overall in Forbes' "America's Best Colleges of 2009."


Colorado College


Colorado College is a four-year private liberal-arts college located in Colorado Springs. The school has a student body size of approximately 2,000 undergraduate students. Colorado College operates on an unconventional block schedule where the school year is divided into eight blocks. Students are required to take one class each block, adding up to a traditional eight classes per school year. U.S. News and World Report frequently ranks Colorado College among its top-tier liberal-arts colleges in America; in 2010, it was ranked 24th.


Colorado School of Mines


Colorado School of Mines is a public college located in Golden. The school is devoted to the teaching of engineering and applied science. Undergraduate studies include concentrations in mathematics, engineering, geoscience, humanities and social science. Mines also operates a geology museum named after the school. The Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum exhibits some of the rarest and most precious stones in the world. U.S. News and World Reports ranked the school 75th on its list of "America's Best Colleges of 2008."


University of Colorado at Boulder


The University of Colorado at Boulder is the main campus of the University of Colorado System, with the other campuses located in Denver and Colorado Springs. Established in 1876, the school is one of the oldest higher-education facilities in the state. The university offers over 150 academic programs and graduates over 6,000 students each year. Past graduates include Kenneth Rutherford, Nobel Peace Prize recipient; Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple; and Scott Carpenter, NASA astronaut. U.S. News and World Report ranks University of Colorado at Boulder 86 on its list of "America's Best Colleges of 2010."


University of Denver


University of Denver is the oldest private university in the entire Rocky Mountain region. The school has an academic faculty of 1,200 teachers and a student body of 11,500 students. Academic programs at University of Denver include business, law, music, journalism, professional psychology, international studies and more. The school also offers an intensive study-abroad program, where students can study in another country at no extra cost for tuition, room and board. As a result, approximately 70 percent of its undergraduate senior class report spending at least one semester studying outside of America. U.S. News and World Report ranks University of Denver 46 on its list of "Best Private Universities of 2010."
