Volcano demonstrations teach children about geology.
Whether for fun or as a science project for school, projects on volcanoes are educational and entertaining. Demonstrating creativity and showing an understanding of a volcano's function improves the overall project. While not a lot of people experience an eruption first hand, a project provides insight and exhibits the consequences of a volcanic eruption.
Written Report
Creating a report that focuses on the basics of volcanoes, their history and the cause and the effect of an eruption is a great way for a child to learn how a volcano's explosion can change history. Include information on the Pompeii volcanic eruption in 79 A.D. or research some of Hawaii's active volcanoes to add to the report.
Lava Mixture
Mixing up the lava mixture is the most fun of any volcano project. First you need an empty soda bottle and enough baking soda to cover the bottom of the bottle. In a separate container, mix 1/4 cup of vinegar, two generous drops of dish soap and some red dye. When the time comes to showcase the volcano, pour the vinegar mixture into the soda bottle for instant erupting action.
Poster Board Volcano
Using poster board, an empty soda bottle and the lava mixture, create a volcano for a school project with no mess and when on a tight budget. Use the poster board to create a cone around the soda bottle, securing with tape, glue or Velcro strips. Use crayons, paint or colored pencils to decorate the volcano appropriately. Ensure the soda bottle is already prepared with baking soda and have the vinegar mixture ready to add when it's time to show the eruption.
Clay or Play-Doh Volcanoes
A volcano can also be shaped around a soda bottle if you use a material like clay or Play-Doh. Mixing ingredients of flour, salt, oil and water creates a clay-like texture from supplies at home that is easy to work with and mold. Food coloring may be added to create landscape colors, the clay model volcano and the lava flow.
