Halls of Higher Education


The following 10 universities, listed alphabetically, are considered top educational facilities in the United States. Statistics cited are for the academic year 2008-2009, and enrollment figures reflect total graduate engineering students ("U.S. News and World Report"). Some of these schools are private institutions with large endowment wealth. Others are public research facilities. They all boast excellent facilities, infrastructure, working conditions, professors and name recognition.


California Institute of Technology/Carnegie Mellon


California Institute of Technology is private research university that places strong emphasis on engineering and manages NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Engineering programs include civil engineering, applied mechanics, computation & neural systems and mechanical engineering. Tuition is $31,437, and 515 students are enrolled.


Carnegie Mellon University, a private research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, offers engineering programs in biomechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, information networking, and materials science engineering. Tuition is $35,700, and 1,868 students are enrolled.


Cockrell School of Engineering/Cornell


The Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin is ranked sixth in the world according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities and 11th by "U.S. News and World Report." The University of Michigan is a public research university. Its engineering programs offer oceanic and space sciences, naval architecture and marine engineering, automotive engineering and pharmaceutical engineering.
