Choosing the right college major may take a little time and effort because it is such a big decision to make. There are so many majors to choose from, so it is important that you select a major that fits your interests, skills and goals. Many students find themselves changing majors while in college. They may begin with one major, but later realize that they would rather pursue another career path. This is very common and it is definitely okay to change majors while you are in college. However, there are few steps you must complete in order to change your college major.
Instructions
1. Decide on the major that you want to pursue. In order to change your college major, you must first pick a new major and career path to follow. Evaluate your skills and interests and think about the different types of careers you might enjoy doing. Also, take a look at things that you‘re good at doing (such as solving math problems, fixing computers or public speaking), your strengths and your personality type and consider all of the careers that may be a good fit for you.
2. Meet with a college career counselor to discuss your career options. A career counselor can provide you with helpful information on the various occupations in the world. She can also give you career tests in order to pinpoint specific jobs that may be a good match for you.
3. Go see your academic counselor or advisor, once you have chosen your new major. You must meet with a counselor or advisor in order to discuss your new career path and to complete the change of major paperwork. Your counselor goes over all of the details with you and lets you know how longs it takes to process the change of major request.
4. Complete the necessary paperwork. You must completely fill out a change of major form and sign and date it. Your counselor may also request that you complete a new academic degree plan, which outlines the courses you need to take in order to earn a degree for that major.
5. Submit the paperwork to the appropriate office. Normally you have to submit your change of major form to the campus admissions or registrar’s office. You may also have to submit a copy of the new degree plan along with the change of major form. Your counselor lets you know where to take the paperwork, or perhaps she may submit the forms for you.
6. Confirm that your change of major request is complete. Check with your counselor to find out if your new major shows in your academic records. He can verify your new information by simply pulling up your academic records in the computer system.
