Geologists study the earth and how it evolves and changes. Students interested in the field and educators looking to further their careers can apply for numerous scholarships and grants offered by nonprofit geology organizations. Awards are available on all levels, from undergraduate to post-doctoral research. Grade school teachers as well as college professors are eligible for grants.
Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists Scholarships
The Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists promotes research and educational opportunities. AEG offers several scholarships and grants for undergraduate and graduate students funded by donors, corporations and bequests to the organization. Students can apply for scholarships and grants that fund field projects, research projects, travel to AEG meetings and tuition. Awards range from $200 to $3,500. Local branches of AEG also award scholarships. Applications for all AEG grants and scholarships are available on the organization's website.
Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute Scholarships
The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to coal mining education in the western United States. RMCMI awards several scholarships to students studying geology or related fields. Students must be residents of an RMCMI state: Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Texas, Utah or Wyoming. There are two types of scholarships: the engineering/geology scholarships are for $2,500 and renewable for up to two years; the technical scholarship is a $1,000 one-time gift for students who hope to apply their education in the coal industry. Each scholarship program includes eight awards. In addition to completing an online application, students must undergo interviews when applying for a scholarship.
Geological Society of America Grants
The Geological Society of America awards numerous grants to undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral scholars. Funds for grants come from donations to the organization's foundation and corporate sponsors. In 2010, the GSA awarded nearly 300 grants to graduate students. The average award was $2,218. GSA branches and sections award grants to undergraduates for individual research and for travel to the annual GSA meeting. Grant amounts vary and some are for as much as several thousand dollars. National Association of Geoscience Teachers
The National Association of Geoscience Teachers is an organization of educators including geology teachers at all levels. The organization awards $500 scholarships to students for field study. NAGT also awards $750 grants to two-year college faculty members and secondary school teachers to attend scientific meetings, purchase classroom materials and take workshops. In 2010, NAGT awarded 19 scholarships and four grants. Applications for NAGT scholarships and grants are available on the organization's website.
