Information On Fuego Volcano

For centuries Fuego Volcano has been one of Central America's most active volcanos. In Spanish it is called Volcan Fuego, which means Fire Volcano. Its indigenous name is Chigag.


Location


Fuego Volcano is one of three large volcanos near Antigua, Guatemala's former capital. It is in the Alotenango region in the southern part of the country.


Eruption Style


Fuego Volcano erupts in what geologists call a vertical eruption, defined by mushroom-shaped clouds rising straight up into the air.


Activity


People began recording Fuego Volcano's eruptions in 1524. It is constantly active, with more than 60 recorded major eruptions since then.


Latest Major Eruption


Fuego Volcano last erupted explosively in 1974, with major ash fall and pyroclastic flows, which consists of a mixture of solid fragments and gases.


Elevation


One of three large volcanoes, Fuego looks down on Antigua, Guatemala from 12,000 feet high. Acatenango and Meseta are the other two volcanoes.
