Zoology students study giraffes and other animals.
Zoology is a field of biology that focuses on the function, growth, classification, habit, behavior and evolution of animals, both living and extinct, that make up the animal kingdom. Three schools in Florida offer a zoology curriculum. The University of Florida and the University of South Florida in Tampa have zoology degree programs, and Florida State University offers a biology degree with an emphasis on zoology.
University of Florida
The University of Florida (UF), located in Gainesville, offers a degree in zoology. UF zoology students learn about animal systems, the structure of organisms and ecosystems, evolution, ecology and the relationship between all organisms and the environment. As part of the curriculum, students also conduct laboratory experiments, engage in fieldwork and complete independent research projects. Within the major itself, students can choose among three specialization tracks: zoologist specialization, preprofessional specialization and education specialization.

Florida State University
Florida State University (FSU), located in Tallahassee, does not offer a degree in zoology. FSU students, however, can earn a degree in biology with a focus and emphasis on zoology through elective coursework. Students following the zoology track in biology study the morphology, physiology, ecology, geology and evolution of animals, plus conceptual approaches relating to animals and the ecosystem. Although not required, it is also strongly advised that zoology students take courses in research methods and complete an independent study.

University of South Florida
The University of South Florida (USF), located in Tampa, offers degrees in zoology and zoology environmental sciences through its biology program. After completing the requisite coursework for a biology major--such as biology, cell biology and genetics--USF students can take at least 8 hours of advanced biology classes in zoology, including vertabrate zoology, invertebrate zoology and animal embryology, to earn a zoology degree. Students studying zoology will also have the opportunity to take laboratory classes and conduct research.
