Become a Volcanologist
Volcanologists study active volcanoes to predict when they will erupt. These professionals save lives, often while residing in exotic locales. If this appeals to you, follow these steps to explore this field.
Instructions
1. Start preparing in high school. Take as many science and math classes as you can. Since the study of volcanoes involves studying geology, make sure you take earth science if it's offered at your high school. Study hard in your other classes to make sure you get into college.
2. Go to college. You will must major in geology and earn a Bachelor of Science to be a volcanologist. Try to attend a college near an active volcano so you can go on field trips to study them. You may even be able to get an internship working for a volcanologist.
3. Get your Masters of Science in geology after you get your B.S. A Masters degree is mandatory if you want to get a job as a volcanologist.
4. Consider getting your doctorate in volcanology. While a Ph.D. may not be mandatory, it's highly recommended. You will probably find your B.S. and Masters will not be enough to become a volcanologist.
5. Look for a job. Many volcanologists in the United States work for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at three different volcano observatories. You can also work at state geological surveys California, Oregon and Washington. Finally, you can continue in a school setting and teach classes on volcanology to budding volcanologists.
