Cut Out Brick To Install A Dryer Vent

You can cut through brick to install a dryer vent without highly specialized tools.

Running a dryer vent through a brick wall can be a little challenging. For homes that have siding as an exterior wall, all you need to do is use a hole saw to drill out your hole. For brick, to drill a circular hole you need a masonry core bit, which can be costly. However, there are other alternatives that allow you to cut out brick to install a dryer vent. These won't leave you with a perfectly clean-looking hole, but the hood of the dryer vent will cover up any imperfections.

Instructions

1. Put on gloves, ear protection and safety glasses. Flying debris can cause serious injury to unprotected body parts.

2. Draw a 4 1/4-inch diameter circle on the brick wall where you want your dryer vent to come through the brick. Use permanent marker so that the circle remains visible throughout the process.

3. Insert a 1/4-inch hammer drill bit into your hammer drill. Drill through the brick along the permanent marker line. Drill a hole every 1/2 inch around the entire circle.

4. Place a chisel on the line and strike it with the hammer. Repeat this process slowly around the entire circle. After the brick circle becomes loose, remove it by hand.

5. Insert your 4 1/4-inch hole saw bit into your drill and finish drilling the hole through the wall. You'll be drilling through the exterior plywood layer. You should then see a clean hole to the interior of your home.
