What Are The Ingredients In Mederma

Mederma is a scar-treatment topical gel or cream manufactured by Merz Pharmaceuticals.It makes scars softer, lighter and less noticeable. Mederma is primarily made of an extract from an onion, and is widely available.

Merz is an international pharmaceutical company based in Frankfurt, Germany. Merz has many offices throughout the world, but the location in Greensboro, North Carolina is dedicated primarily to dermatology. a dermatological product, is also produced in Greensboro, North Carolina.


Allium Cepa Linn


Allium cepa Linn is a species of onion, sometimes called the 'spring onion, which is the source of allium cepa, which is called and tradmarked as 'Cepalin' by Merz Pharmaceuticals. Cepalin is the main ingredient in Mederma.


Other Ingredients


Besides the active ingredient of Cepalin (Allium Cepa Linn or extract from 'spring onion'), Merz includes the following ingredients in it's products.


Purified water.


Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice.


Bulb Extract.


Xanthan Gum: a polysaccharide derived from the combination of Xanthomonas campestris (bacteria) and corn sugar.


PEG-4: diheptanoate


Allantoin: 5-ureidohydantoin or glyoxyldiureide. This substance is derived from the allantois, which is an embryonic excretory organ present in most mammals (but not humans). It is a moisturizer.


Methylparaben: Methyl paraben, a kind of paraben, and is the methyl ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid.


Sorbic Acid: Also known as 2 or 4-hexadienoic acid, is a food preservative derived from the unripe berries of the Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia).


Fragrance.


Types of Mederma


Merz Pharmaceuticals produces a few varieties of this product, all with the same basic ingredients. One variant includes an extra ingredient which provides SPF factor 30 to protect from the radiation from the sun. A third variant is designed for kids, and includes an extra ingredient that changes it's color (to purple) which disappears when applied.


Effectiveness


While Merz claims that the active ingredients are able to soften, smooth, and make scars less noticeable, there is no peer reviewed research that the primary ingredient, Cepalin (spring onion extract), is any better than a simple moisturizer (such as petroleum jelly) in providing any healing for scars.


Merz does not claim that Mederma can heal scars at all, and only claims to soften, smooth, and make them less noticeable. Whether it does this better than a simple moisturizer is not evident.
