Plant Shady Lady Tomato Plants

Shady Lady tomato plants are known for being heavy producers of large, juicy tomatoes. The plants themselves are large, with lots of foliage, and are relatively easy to grow. They also mature fast, making them ideal for areas with short growing seasons. You can go from planting to harvesting ripe tomatoes in fewer than 80 days. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Prepare the ground in a sunny area by raking the soil and disposing of any rocks or twigs. Mix in topsoil--one cubic yard for every 100 square feet of land--and rake smooth.

2. Plant the Shady Lady tomato plants about 12 to 18 inches apart. Dig a hole three times as deep and as wide as the root ball, position the plant in the hole and fill with topsoil. Create a little indentation around each plant to allow water to collect.

3. Insert a stake or tomato cage into the soil. As the plant grows, secure its center stalk to the stake or wire rims of the cage with nursery ties (plastic-coated wire). When fruit grows, you might need to prop fruit-bearing stems up as well.

4. Water the tomato plants daily. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Mist the plant occasionally.

5. Check for insects, particularly the dreaded tomato horn worm. They can easily destroy a tomato plant in days. Handpick them off or use an organic pesticide such as Dipel Dust or Monterey Garden Insect Spray.
