South Carolina Eighth Grade Science Activities

Search for fossilized shark teeth with your eighth graders.


Eighth graders in South Carolina have available to them a wealth of opportunities to learn about science through a broad range of engaging activities. Science museums, fossil hunts and the South Carolina Aquarium offer summer camps, classes, adventure tours and science exhibits for eighth grade students to experience science directly. Arrange a daylong field trip filled with science experiences that will enrich the minds of your students.


South Carolina State Museum


Study animals and plants in their natural habitat with a docent-led science museum trip.


The South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, South Carolina, offers a host of science activities suitable for eighth grade students. Arrange docent-led tours of South Carolina habitats to teach students about native species and the importance of environmental protection. Study the geology of the moon with a Lunar Outpost field trip that teaches students about the minerals of the moon by examining various mineral samples. Take students on a tour of the natural history of South Carolina in the museum's natural history gallery. Give your eighth graders an opportunity to learn about weather in the star lab. As of 2010, admission to the museum is $7 for adults and children ages 13 and over. Groups of 10 or more pay $6 per person.

Aquarium Trip


The South Carolina Aquarium offers a huge range of exhibits and activities for your eighth graders to learn from and enjoy. Organize a daylong field trip to the aquarium and let your students experience penguins, sea turtles, sharks, ocean fish and an albino alligator up close. The aquarium galleries and exhibits follow a sequence, showcasing the plants and animals from the mountain forests of South Carolina through the coastal plain, saltmarsh aviary, coastal and ocean zones. The aquarium offers a touch tank where your students can touch sting rays, sea urchins and various species of crabs. Visit the aquarium's website to plan your trip and find up-to-date information on exhibits and special programs. As of 2010, admission costs $17.95 per person, or $13.50 per adult and $7.00 per eighth grade student for school groups of more than 10 people.

Fossil Hunting Trip


Take your eighth grade students on a fossil hunting trip in the South Carolina lowcountry. Fossil hunters consistently find fossilized shark teeth of all different shapes and sizes, including palm-sized megalodon shark tooth fossils. LowCountry Fossil Excursions offers three-hour adventure tours to fossil sites in South Carolina's lowcountry. All equipment is provided and children are guaranteed to find fossils they can take home with them. Students will learn about geology, evolution, extinction and fossils on the trip. Trips cost $55 per student and adult as of June 2010.
