Weatherstripping is an important but often overlooked component on exterior doors. French doors join in the center to seal out the weather. Weatherstripping can become worn and need repair on the worn areas. Regularly inspect your weatherstripping to ensure you have an airtight seal for your exterior French doors.
Instructions
1. Mark any worn segments of weatherstripping around the doors with a pen.
2. Cut the worn segments of weatherstripping in a clean line, using a utility knife at a natural transition along the door such as from corner to corner.
3. Remove the weatherstripping in need of replacement with a flat-head screwdriver. Slide the head of the screwdriver underneath the weatherstripping and gradually work it out of the slot. Pull the weatherstripping completely out of the slot.
4. Measure the length of the door where the weatherstripping segment was removed, using a tape measure. Cut off a new segment from the roll to the measured length, using a utility knife.
5. Push one end of the replacement segment up tight against the end of the existing weatherstripping. Press the weatherstripping into the slot as you work your way down the door until you reach the other end of the existing section. Press the last portion into the slot with the flat-head screwdriver to finish off the joint between the replacement and existing weatherstripping.
Tips Warnings
Keep a roll of weatherstripping on hand for routine maintenance.
Keep your body and hands clear of the path of the utility knife when cutting weatherstripping.
