New Heat Pump: Goodman vs Westinghouse
I have to decide on the new 3.5 ton heat pump unit for my house in the deep south and would some input from this forum. Here is the choice: a Goodman for $3600 (has a reciprocating compressor), or a Westinghouse for $4075 (with a scroll compressor). Personally, I wouldn't use either one, I would get another bid or two for a Rheem, Armstrong or even a Trane. You didn't give many details about the units (models, SEER ratings, warranties, etc) but if I someone put a gun to my head and said choose, I would go with the Westinghouse. Goodman definitely does not have a good track record with reliability or performance. They are, for sure, a case where you get what you pay for...cheap price, cheap quality. I don't have the model numbers yet, but they are both 12 Seer. The same company gave me bids on Heil and Rheem as well, but due to a number of factors, I narrowed the choices to the other two options. What are the negatives about the Westinghouse? Westinghouse They are still around?? wow.. I've only seen a few! A neighbor behind my parents had one and had nothing but trouble, and took alot of $$$$ to run! I recall seeing her meter spining like crazy!!! Her house was 1/4 size of my parents, and cost her twice as much to run. They end up taking it out, and putting in a Trane. I agree with firsthvac about the track record on Goodmen, I have not seen one Goodmen in a home that is older than 3 years old. And seen alot of thier A/C being replaced with more of the well known brands like Trane, Rheem, and York. personnally i would stay away from the goodman...it is junk.....also commonly used as builder grade...and we all know what builder grade means.....get some other quotes.....try Carrier..their high efficiency units with the Puron refrigerant are as efficient as anyones.........or stick with the chevrolets.......york, luxaire, rheem, ruud...all quality equipment and will work and cool your house as good as the next.....just remember proper sizing of the equipment is the most important thing you can do, besides getting a reliable experienced contractor to install it. Westinghouse brand HVAC equipment division was bought out by the Nordyne, Inc. Still manufactured with the Westinghouse name. nordyne also makes tappan and gibson. we have a westinghouse supplier right here in town. my opinion is that this unit would operate properly if installed correctly, but the life expectancy is less than that of other brands. When you don't know asking questions from a disinterested party is the best way to go... Remember you get what you pay for...Westinghouse has a far greater rep than Goodman.. Goodman uses Bristol compressors (junk), Melco was a AC unit made in the 60s and 70s and was top of the line, (still running today) , but they were expensive, and low bidding put them out of business, a shame! Looking at the units, you will find the expensive units have protective devices that save the compressor from dieing, or squeezes out the max of energy, or perhaps a better fan motor that will outlast the standard....or like the case of the scroll, they take a slug where a recip wont...or very quiet, small, ... ect. General Electric made a great unit, though I don't think they produce anymore. Try American Standard... they have a proven track record. became trane in @1982, not sure who bought who. looking back, those luxaire condensers with the slant front were real troopers, 23 yrs and still running im MANY cases. some of those whirlpool/kenmores are still trucking after 20 yrs too! I received a quote on a rheem unit (about $4500 for a 13 Seer). That seems to the way I should go from all the replies (and thanks to all of you who have given me input). One thought: with changes in technology continuing, do I really want to pay for a high quality, long lasting unit? Granted, I do want a realitively good performing unit that will last several years. They make a good unit for sure.... Don't forget that your utility company will give you a good rebate for a SEER of 13! Call them to get the specifics.
