Making your own place cards offers a fun opportunity to add your own brand of creativity to help guests find their place around the dining table. For Christmas, place cards can be as simple or as complicated, as whimsical or as formal, as creative or as traditional as you want them to be. It really is a matter of personal taste and whatever you feel is appropriate for the occasion. Place cards can either be actual paper cards or can be an object labeled with the name of the person.
Instructions
The Card Stock Place Card
1. Cut out a 5-by-5-inch square from card stock.
2. Fold the card in half and make a crease.
3. Write the name of each Christmas dinner guest on a separate card with either a marker or a pen.
4. Decorate the card by either drawing a border in red and green with the aid of a straight edge or using a stamp. Alternatively, cut out a miniature paper snowflake from a different color of paper and glue it to the card. A simple way to decorate each card is to add a sticker to each in a Christmas theme. For an interesting look, use a colored pencil to do a rubbing of a relatively flat object. This can look quite sophisticated with a gold or silver pencil.
The Object Place Card
5. Find different objects for each guest. Consider items such as ornaments, fresh cuts of holly, candy canes or old-fashioned toys.
6. Cut a small tag from a sheet of card stock in whatever shape appeals to you. The traditional gift tag shape is a good choice.
7. Punch a hole in the tag.
8. Write a name on each tag. Decorate if desired.
9. Cut a length of string or ribbon and tie a tag to an object with it. Continue for the rest of your tags and objects.
Tips Warnings
Write each guest's name directly on the objects with a permanent marker if you desire and it is possible.
Use a chisel tip marker if you want your place card writing to have a calligraphic look.
If you have poor handwriting, type the names instead of writing them and print them out on the card stock.
