Vent hood duct work installation goes easier with advance planning.
A vent hood removes smoke and cooking odors from the kitchen. It also prevents the buildup of grease on cabinets, counter tops and other surfaces. The safe installation of a vent hood and its duct work helps guard against the possible spread of a stove-top fire. Before beginning your project, read and understand the product manual to help smooth the installation.
Layout
Make a decision on the path of the duct run horizontally --- through an exterior wall --- or vertically, through the roof. Check the route to make sure it free of obstacles, like pipes, conduit or fire blocks. Achieve the best results by making the run as short and as straight as possible. Read the manufacturer's instructions for the product and follow the local building codes. Fewer turns and bends in the duct work facilitate greater operating efficiency for the vent hood. Straighter routes lessen resistance and keep the vent hood fan from overworking to expel byproducts from the kitchen.
Ductwork Length
The vent hood size determines the maximum allowable distance for the duct run. Some other factors to consider include the duct's diameter and the number of elbows in the run. Usually, local building codes set a limit on the maximum distance. For example, many building codes allow a distance of 25 feet, which includes the installation of two 90-degree elbows. Each additional elbow, if allowed by code or the vent hood manufacturer, may reduce the length by 2 feet.
Installation Procedures
Use rigid, galvanized stainless steel duct. When venting duct work through the roof, run ducts between two rafters. Conduct a test before cutting the roof hole; drive a nail through the underside of the roof and verify the location. Cut the hole at least two feet away from the chimney or other pipes. For easier cutting, work from the interior. A reciprocating saw cuts through wood and shingles. Follow the same basic rules for a wall installation.
Duct Termination
Do not terminate the duct in an attic or chimney. Always vent the duct to the outside of the building. This minimizes possible fire hazards. Usually, local building codes require the installation of a thimble or collar where the duct passes through an opening. These devices provide clearance from combustible materials.
Masonry Walls
For exterior walls comprised of brick or some other masonry material, cutting the hole will be a bit more labor intensive. Mark your opening and use a masonry bit to drill holes at the four corners of the opening. Between the corner holes, drill a series of small holes close together around the perimeter of the opening. Use a masonry chisel to break through the material.
